International Labour Organization
Topic: Child Rights in Global Supply Chains
Committee Profile
Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency within the United Nations that tackles issues related to labor standards, work ethics, social protection, etc. The ILO is the only tripartite agency for that reason, as it mixes delegates from these organizations. The ILO devotes itself to promoting decent work environments for workers across the globe. This includes setting the standards and principles for workers, promoting and creating better opportunities for people regardless of gender or race, and further strengthening the effectiveness of social protection. According to the Department of Labor, there are reportedly 25,000 children working directly in Congolese cobalt mining, one sector out of a massive illegal industry, taking advantage of child labor to further their profit. Stemming back to the 1970s, the ILO strongly condemns and has provided many resolutions to combat this issue, yet the precedent still stands today. Delegates are challenged to propose solutions that stop further child labor, while also supporting businesses and sustainable production methods.
