CHILE
THE COUP OF
SALVADOR ALLENDE
Topic: The Chilean Coup, 1973
Committee Profile
Once hailed as Latin America’s democratic beacon, Chile now teeters on collapse. President Salvador Allende, the world’s first democratically elected Marxist leader, faces crippling inflation, strikes, and shortages that paralyze the nation. Tensions rise as the military grows restless and foreign powers cast their shadows. On September 11th, tanks rolled into Santiago and La Moneda Palace and became the stage for a coup led by General Augusto Pinochet. In this simulation, history is not fixed. You will take on the roles of generals, politicians, civilians, and foreign actors grappling with ideology, power, and survival amid the Cold War. Will you defend Allende’s fragile experiment, embrace military rule, or chart a new course for Chile’s future?
The fate of the nation and democracy itself lies in your hands.

Tristan Huntley is a second-year Political Science and Film and Television Minor student at UCLA. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he’s been involved in Model United Nations for the past year — serving as both a crisis backroom staffer and a crisis dais staffer through UCLA — and now he’s excited to hone his skills further through PacMUN. Outside the committee room, Tristan is passionate about political advocacy, hiking, and rock climbing. When he’s not working a conference or writing a background guide, you’ll probably find him exploring new restaurants, off-roading, or hanging out with friends in K-Town in LA.

Avril has been a committee director for SCVMUN and PacMUN for multiple years, and she’s exited to return as a Crisis Director for this year’s specialized historical crisis committee. Outside of MUN Avril likes to travel, go to concerts, hang out at the beach and stay updated on current events. Most importantly she’s excited to share her experiences with all of you (delegates)!
